Foundations

How AI models actually work: what they can do, where they fail, and how to tell the difference.

Broad

  1. Nº 013 The new Claude lineup and what it breaks 5 min

Claude's July 2026 lineup is four models: Fable 5, Glasswing-gated Mythos 5, Sonnet 5 at intro pricing, and Opus 4.8, plus the three migration changes that bite.

  2. Nº 021 Judge whether AI has original ideas 7 min

Whether AI can have original ideas is a debate that keeps moving the goalposts. A way to judge it honestly: read the trend line, and see why learning to predict text can build real understanding.

Practitioner

  1. Nº 018 Claude and OpenAI, one prompting playbook 5 min

OpenAI and Anthropic prompting guides are one playbook when read side by side: lean out the prompt. Where they converge, where they diverge, which habits to drop.

Field notes on this layer

Foundations is where the Academy starts because every other layer leans on it. Before prompting tricks or agent setups, you need a working picture of what a large language model can and cannot do, how the current lineup differs, and why the model you learned last quarter may not be the model shipping now.

The foundations here are deliberately practical: release notes read closely, vendor guides compared side by side, and the migration changes that actually bite. A typical guide in this layer runs 5 minutes, so the whole shelf fits inside a coffee break.

How AI models actually work: what they can do, where they fail, and how to tell the difference. Guides are ordered Broad, then Practitioner, then Deep, and each one lists its prerequisites.

How long does this layer take to read?

The layer currently holds 3 guides, about 17 minutes of reading in total. Each guide also ends with a short exercise you can run the same day.

Do I need to read the guides in order?

No. Levels run Broad to Deep and prerequisites are marked on every guide, so you can enter anywhere and follow the marked links back when a guide assumes something you have not read.
